It is simply one more shovel of soil over the grave of historical religious practice, understanding, and tradition.

We would go to these services that were complicated, ritualistic, and quite frankly, rough on the knees. We would dress up as if it were something important. We would wash the auto the night before (or curry the best buggy horse, depending the epoch). It was part of the process of doing obeisance and relating both to our Faith and our Fellows.

We remember competing for position, as acolytes, and the pride we had in our vestments. The "senior" acolytes, graduated from candle lighting and snuffing…or the middle-ranking flag bearers (American and Episcopal flags) marching behind the crucifer during the Processional and Recessional…organ and choir blasting away with, "A Mighty Fortress….". It was such a noble time…remembering the archaic, almost ancient form of English…and all its attendant eloquence.
I remember the wearing of glistening white gloves, as a priest's server during both the simple, quiet Wednesday morning mass (07:00) and the early mass on Sundays, also a 07:00…no music or song, no office lights (no sermon)…just an unadorned, relatively brief service with Holy Communion. Usual number of communicants? Around 70 to 125.
Then the standard 11:00 Mass, a real fashion show, and men with bright, shiny black shoes, 28 members in the choir, a Ph.d. Organist and all nature of ritual. Normal number of communicants? 300 - 375 parishioners and visitors.
It was very much like a transfusion for the Soul.

This past Sunday? 12 communicants for the early (08:00) service…and 36 for the 11:00 mass. McAllen during my time as a "Senior Acolyte" had a bit fewer than 40,000 population…about half being Roman Catholic. The Anglicans of Saint John's would remind its Roman cousins that the coral snake is smaller but its venom is much stronger than the rattlesnake. You know, brotherly religious conviviality.

Now McAllen has around 150,000 inhabitants…we attend from next-door, adjacent Mission, Texas with a population of 70,000 (five times the size of my epoch in 1960)…and the pews are mainly empty at Saint John's Church - Episcopal…

The American branch of the Anglican Communion…Que en Paz
Descances ….

El Gringo ViejoDavid Christian Newtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02486433908063462273noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759178030677978044.post-68876240854860976712018-11-28T14:55:02.068-08:002018-11-28T14:55:02.068-08:00Katherine, I think you are exactly correct.Katherine, I think you are exactly correct.Michael Berryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16053154167623446182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759178030677978044.post-49500049617415207802018-11-16T13:28:58.396-08:002018-11-16T13:28:58.396-08:00The Declaration of Independence has one of the mor...The Declaration of Independence has one of the more profound Christian ideas put into words, "Enemies in war, in peace friends."

May God preserve Bishop Love as he fulfills his Christian duties. While I admire his willingness to fight the good fight, +Brewer probably has the better strategy. Basically, a parish can do so, but it is going to be VERY costly from a financial standpoint.
